Electronic Arts breathes release life into Dead Space

When it comes to the survival horror genre, as gamers we’d generally turn to the likes of Capcom (Resident Evil), Konami (Silent Hill), and SEGA (Condemned: Criminal Origins) as videogame publishers of choice when it comes to having our bowels well and truly loosened via blood-curdling gameplay. Credit: EA.When thinking of Electronic Arts, we’d ordinarily be for expecting little more than annual sports regurgitations, endless street-racing revamps and tweaked World War II first-person shooters.That being said, California-based EA, one of the world’s most prominent third-party publishers, has this week announced that its brand new sci-fi survival horror IP “Dead Space” will be screaming -- quite literally -- onto retail stores in North America and Europe on October 31 of 2008.“Survival horror is about experiencing a terrifying, and deeply personal fiction,” commented the game’s executive producer, Glen Schofield. “Dead Space is being developed as a single-player thriller that delivers the chilling, claustrophobic feeling of being isolated in a dark environment, while being stalked by some truly horrific enemies.”

Schofield went on to describe Dead Space’s Halloween release as “the perfect time for EA to deliver the fear and anxiety that will keep survival horror fans up playing all night.”Currently in development at EA’s Redwood Shores home studio, Dead Space will appear in all its horrific glory on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.Not much is known about Dead Space at this point, except that the player will assume the role of the sole survivor aboard USG Ishimura, a ravaged spaceship that used to hold more than a 1100 crew members… before they were all wiped out by a terrifying alien infestation.BioShock meets DOOM meets Resident Evil meets F.E.A.R. meets Gears of War meets Filled Pants meets Potential Winner.
