The market-leading Nintendo Wii was undoubtedly the most sought-after ‘must have’ gaming gift item during the festive run-up, with shoppers around the world struggling to find available units of Nintendo’s hit console to ensure a white Christmas of some kind come December 25.

Despite Nintendo’s recent admission that retailers simply wouldn’t be able to meet demand – and the near mythical status afforded the Wii over the past month – it would appear that it has still been a bumper Christmas for Nintendo, retail outlets, and consumers alike.
Moreover, leading online store Amazon.com has this week revealed that massive sales of the Nintendo Wii videogame console have played an important role in making the 2007 holiday season its strongest ever.
Nintendo’s ‘little console that can’ duly joined the ranks of festive hot-sellers such as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (both on DVD), with Amazon noting that, when available to customers, the Nintendo Wii sold a staggering 17 units per second. Another popular gift item in the world of consumer electronics was Apple’s MacBook computer.
With the draw of Nintendo’s motion-sensing console driving its sales for December, Amazon claims that it sold a holiday-high 5.4 million items on December 10, which equates to some 62.5 items per second.
