The continuing appeal of the hugely popular Guitar Hero franchise has widened even further this week with yet more downloadable rock anthems hitting the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store for Neversoft-developed Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

The new ‘Classic Rock Track Pack’ for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 offers fret-busting fans a trio of master recordings to flex their gaming muscles on, with the pack consisting of Boston’s ‘Piece of Mind,’ Foreigner’s somewhat aptly titled ‘Juke Box Hero,’ and Journey’s ‘Any Way You Want It.’
Other available Guitar Hero III master recordings include offerings from musical legends such as Aerosmith, Beastie Boys, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, and The Rolling Stones. Individual tracks by true guitar heroes Slash (Guns ‘N’ Roses) and Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave) are also available.
In related news, the Guitar Hero franchise recently became a billion-dollar franchise in North America after a mere 26 months at retail.

"Guitar Hero’s popularity with broad audiences is a confirmation that video games have become a true mass medium."
With regard to the effect of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and its online compatibility, the latest series offering has seen more than 5 million tracks downloaded in the ten weeks since it was released.
