no HD DVD? noo... not worth the 480..IMO theres not much elite about it cept the hdmi. If this is elite to microsoft then sony's PS3 is Ultimate.

New version of the 360 will compete more directly with Sony's PlayStation 3. Hard drive is twice as big as that on the $599 PS3 and comes with an HDMI output, like the PS3.

Only remaining difference will be the PS3's Blu-ray drive; Xbox 360 owners who want to watch high-def discs have to purchase an HD DVD add-on drive for $199.

While Sony has Blu-ray drives built into the PS 3, Microsoft chose not to include the $199 optional HD-DVD movie player in the new Xbox 360 Elite. That’s a good move as it looks like there isn’t a great deal of demand for the next-generation movie disks yet. Blu-ray is starting to pull away in sales because of the PS 3, but there is enough confusion out there so that consumers aren’t buying yet. There are combo players available from LG, and Warner Bros. is promising combo disks with both Blu-ray and HD-DVD on them. You can bet if the demand for HD-DVD was huge, Microsoft would have built it into the Elite.

I fail to see what exactly is new with this Xbox release. So it has some spiffy black coating, a DRM pandering HDMI port, and a cooler CPU. To pay a premium for just that, though, is ludicrous, made worse by the fact that you must buy a separate hard dive for the oh-so-affordable price of 180 bucks, especially when decent drives of that capacity can be had for around a third of the price.

Can anyone say ripoff? Oh wait, this is Microsoft, everyone already knew that.

I see the Sony fanbois are busy. You'd think they'd be enjoying their very in-stock platform, but then there aren't many games for it and those that do exist are pretty lame and expensive. So they are here dissin' the nextgen winner. MSFT in 1st, Nintendo a strong second and Sony getting murdered. Who would have though this a year ago? Sorry 'bois, you spent $1K on the wrong platform. Get over it.

The standalone 120 gig drive is for the original 360. The elite comes with it.

It doesn't exactly 'com packed with' a 120 gb hard drive if you have to buy it separately for 180$.

You only have to buy the 120gb drive if you have a white xbox. The elite comes WITH the 120gb hd.

it's funny, why did they not include the hd-dvd drive built into the system? is microsoft dumb, just gives me another reason to buy a ps3 over a 360

Though if anyone would pay attention to the fact that the hard drive comes with the system and if you knew how to comprehend things properly, then you would notice that its actually a better deal than the Ps3. Which sucks horribly! Sony could never match what microsoft does. Microsoft is good about slowly releasing what they create. As to where sony packed everything that they possibly could into a next gen thats just gonna die in a year. Its sad that a system like the wii totally smoked the ps3 when sony had hyped up their console so bad, But yet it had horrrible ratings.

so much hate and anger from sony and microsoft fans lets be honest the next gen sytems are a bit better than the current and fading away consoles but are they really worth the big wad of cash to play games- not reaLLY WORTH IT UNLESS U AHVE hd AND WILL BLU RAY EVEN CARTH ON

hd-dvd will never be built in simply because amazon.com and several major outlets have pointed out that Blueray is now outselling hd-dvd 3 to 1 .. with the first ever hd film to get into the amazon charts was casino royal at #7 ... big companys have much more of a say in what products are scraped and hd-dvd will fast become obsolete .. and people laughed at sony !

It's a smart tactic that microsoft didn't add in a HD-DVD player to the Elite.
If they did, the price would probably be around $679 or more which is going to piss off a lot of people who want the Elite but can't afford it. It's also a smart idea on Microsoft's end to not include an HD-DVD player as nobody knew initially which format would be the clear winner when Blu-Ray and HD-DVD were announced and released. This gives a potential xbox 360 buyer a choice in the future if they feel the time is right to upgrade to a HD-DVD player. Unlike Sony, they built-in the Blu-Ray player at the beginning and forced extra costs on us whether we like it or not. If Blu-Ray was an add-on, the PS3 itself would have been hundreds cheaper. Let's face it, Microsoft played their cards well by not shoving an HD-DVD player in the Elite console making costs higher, and right now we all know that HD-DVD movies are losing to Blu-Ray in terms of sales. If the Elite 360 had a built-in HD-DVD player which means higher retail costs for each unit, I'm pretty sure there would be plenty of disgruntled 360 owners right now complaining about 'why did Microsoft include this retarded HD-DVD player? I'm paying an extra hundred dollars more for a player that'll probably be obsolete in a couple years.' If possible, once HD-DVD is finally seen as the clear loser, Microsoft may even obtain license to make an add-on Blu-Ray player; probably won't happen but it's possible. Sony is one of the founders along with several other electronics manufacturers of HDMI....so it may be a possibility that Microsoft is paying some sort of license to use HDMI on their current Elite console. Though Sony and Microsoft are competitors in this video game console industry, Sony does obtain license from Microsoft to run Windows on their Sony Vaio laptops. So, I'd stop hating on Microsoft's decision to not build in an HD-DVD player into the Elite system.
